JULY 26, 2006: BUSY WEEK YIELDS PRO-LIFE VICTORIES IN CONGRESS[41]

THE CHILD CUSTODY PROTECTION ACT (S.403)

Contact your Senators to thank them or to express your disappointment based on how they voted on the commonsense Child Custody Protection Act. The bill, which passed by a vote of 55 to 34, will make it a federal offense to transport a minor across state lines to obtain an abortion, in order to avoid a law in her home state requiring parental involvement prior to an abortion. The Democrats are trying to obstruct the bill from going to Conference Committee which is the next step before the bill can be signed in to law.

BIOETHICS LEGISLATION

Last week, three bioethics bills came before Congress. Please contact your Senators, Representative and the President in regards to the following bills voted on last week. You do not have to know how your Senators or Representative voted, we have taken care of that for you. Just click on the links below and you will be directed to the correct letters.

FETUS FARMING PROHIBITION ACT (S. 3504)

Thank your Senators and Representative for passing the Fetus Farming Prohibition Act. S. 3504 passed with a vote of 100-0 in the Senate and 425-0 in the House. This legislation, sponsored by Senators Brownback and Santorum, will prevent the heinous act of growing babies to harvest them for their body parts.

ALTERNATIVE PLURIPOTENT STEM CELL THERAPIES ENHANCEMENT ACT (S. 2754)

Thank your Senators for voting for the Alternative Pluripotent Stem Cell Therapies Enhancement Act (S. 2754). The bill passed by a vote of 100 to 1.

This bill would fund alternative research without destroying human life.

This legislation which passed earlier in the day in the Senate failed in the House 273-154. Because of the nature of the vote, the legislation required a two-thirds majority to pass and be sent to the President for his signature. This partisan move blocked this commonsense bill that would have funded alternative research without destroying human life.

TAXPAYER FUNDING FOR HUMAN EMBRYO EXPERIMENTATION (H.R. 810)

The Senate passed H.R. 810, Taxpayer Funding for Human Embryo Experimentation bill by a vote of 63-37. This legislation will federally fund embryonic stem cell research. If this becomes law, tax dollars would fund the creation and destruction of human life in its earliest stages in the name of "science." There is ZERO evidence that this type of research will cure diseases like proponents of this bill claim.

The House passed H.R. 810 by a vote of 238-194 on May 24, 2005 so this bill went to the President. The President vetoed the bill. The House then immediately tried to override the President’s veto. Thankfully, the attempt failed with a vote of 235 to 193 and no tax dollars will be used to fund destructive embryonic stem cells.

Thank the President for signing S. 3504, the Fetus Farming Prohibition Act into law. This legislation will prevent the heinous act of growing babies to harvest them for their body parts. The President vetoed the Taxpayer Funding for Human Embryo Experimentation bill. This legislation would federally fund embryonic stem cell research and was designed to override the President’s policy from 2001 that banned federally funding such destructive research.
