George W. Bush US President 2001 to present

Remarks at National Day of Prayer and Remembrance 9/14/2001:
"... On this national day of prayer and remembrance, we ask almighty God to watch over our nation, and grant us patience and resolve in all that is to come. We pray that He will comfort and console those who now walk in sorrow. We thank Him for each life we now must mourn, and the promise of a life to come.

"As we have been assured, neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, can separate us from God's love. [Romans 8:38-39] May He bless the souls of the departed. May He comfort our own. And may He always guide our country.

"God bless America."[8]

From a contemporary newspaper editorial:
"To those of us who have followed the life of George W. Bush specifically since his recommitment to his faith in Jesus Christ in the mid-1980s, which he describes in his book. A Charge to Keep - his display of calm and confidence comes as no surprise.

"The reasons for his ability to lead the nation during such a critical time are many, but not a small one is that Mr. Bush is a man who prays. Not just when storms come, but when the sun is shining, as well. He has said he begins each day with Bible reading and time on his knees in prayer. And he often turns to prayer throughout the day. ...

"At the threshold of his presidency, Mr. Bush gave a poignant interview to USA Today in which he made the following, almost prophetic statement: 'I think people are going to find that in tough times ... they're going to see a steady hand, because the rock [Jesus Christ] on which I stand is something other than the moment, the emotion of the day. Faith can be a steadying influence.'"[24]
