Prepared maps for General Washington before the Battle of Brandywine. . . Held several offices in Delaware including member of the Delaware State Legislature in 1784-86 and in 1788 . . . Attended all sessions at the Constitutional Convention, and spoke on several occasions . . . One of the signers of the Constitution . . . First Postmaster of Wilmington (1790-1792) . . . He served on the board of trustees of the College of Wilmington and as a lay leader at the Old Swedes Church.


From an autographed letter to his son, James, on February 24, 1794, from Wilmington, Delaware:
"[D]on't forget to be a Christian. I have said much to you on this head and I hope an indelible impression is made."[12]
